Generally speaking, an adult's body is made up of 60% water. Your organs function better when they are properly hydrated. Of course, many factors play a role, but that just shows you how important it is to be properly hydrated! Hydration before, during, and after physical activity is important, but it is more so in the heat. Add into the mix an increased call volume and extended periods in the sun, the need for hydration skyrockets! Water is best, but electrolyte balance is key as well.
Not all drinks are created equal
Be on the lookout for drinks that tout themselves as healthy but contain a lot of extra sugar or caffeine. They can be very dehydrating! Electrolyte infused drinks can be good in moderation especially during increased physical activity. A good rule of thumb is to have 8 oz. of water for every 8 oz. of Gatorade, Propel, etc.
An apple a day...
Did you know fruits and vegetables are also an excellent source of water? Just another reason they are great for you!
Dehydration is serious
Dehydration can be a very serious condition when not treated properly and early. If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated! More serious signs of dehydration include nausea, headache, fatigue, altered mental status, fever, low BP, and dry skin.
